Unique Jamaica Scores at CMEX - 19th October, 2006

Unique Jamaica (UJ) was on the lips of over 100 participants at the Caribbean Media Exchange on Sustainable Tourism (CMEx) in Rodney Bay, St. Lucia, following the energetic presentation by UJ Chair, Millicent Lynch, on Sunday, October 15, 2006.

CMEx brings together Caribbean and international media practitioners annually to reflect on issues related to sustainable tourism.

At a four-day conference marked by state-of-the-art video and powerpoint presentations and rich discussions, Lynch captivated participants starting her luncheon presentation with the sounds of Harry Belafonte’s “Day O”.

Bursting into the room, resplendent in Jamaica national costume, a basket of made-in-Jamaica treats on her arm, Lynch repeatedly asked, “Have you ever been to Jamaica?” as she extolled the virtues of “The Land of Look Behind”, Cockpit Country, donkey rides, jerk pit trails, simple community pursuits, all combined with the “white sand beaches, majestic mountains, pulsating reggae music”, to make Jamaica “Unique”.

Noting that “many of today’s travelers want no glitter, no glitz, no fanfare –just pure, simple enjoyment.  They want to enjoy the things Jamaicans enjoy everyday”, Unique Jamaica, she said, “is a network of travel/tourism companies including hotels, restaurants, attractions, tour operators, transportation companies and media outlets, which have united their efforts to deliver an authentic travel experience to the nature/culture/adventure traveller.”

Unique offers specialized travel packages, tailor-making these to suit the personal interests and preferences of the traveler.

Half and full-day tours are coupled with a variety of accommodations or the traveler may rent a car and follow the approved trail in pursuit of their Unique Jamaica adventure.

Unique experiences fall in three categories:

·         Jamaica naturally, which includes all soft adventure –hiking, bird watching, mountain biking, rain forest canopy tours, etc.;

·         Taste of Jamaica, which highlights the culinary flavours of the country as well as its vibrant artwork;

·         Roots Jamaica, which gives guests an insight into ’s rich cultural fabricfrom dancehall parties, reggae clubs, to historic great houses and plantation tours.

Unique Jamaica Jerk Trail Launched - June 15, 2006

Visitors to Jamaica can now enjoy an authentic Jamaican culinary adventure thanks to the new “Unique Jamaica Jerk Trail” developed by Unique Jamaica - a consortium of hotels and allied services including attractions and restaurants, dedicated to supporting community efforts and promoting sustainable tourism.

The Jerk Trail to be launched on Friday, June 23, 2006, by Unique Jamaica in association with the Charles Town Maroon Council, features a seven-day tour with a selection of “jerk stops” designed for persons who want to “explore, taste and feel the real Jamaica”.  The Minister of Tourism, Entertainment & Culture, Hon. Aloun Ndombet Assamba, will launch the trail.

The launch, on Quao Day, at Charles Town, Portland, is particularly significant given Portland’s reputation as “the Home of Jerk” and Quao’s status as a hero among Charles Town Maroons.

“The Land of Look Behind” – the Charles Town Maroon Village, the first stop on the Unique Jamaica Jerk Trail, allows visitors to meet descendants of the first Africans brought to Jamaica in the 15th and 16th Century by the Spanish.  The Maroons will show them how jerk was originally made in a pit in the ground, a process designed to keep smoke to a minimum and so avoid detection by the British who roamed the forests.

After a morning filled with history, culture and epicurean treats, the visitors will continue to Port Antonio and Berridale for a lazy day of rafting down the Rio Grande.

Unique Jamaica Chairman, Millicent Lynch, noted that Jamaican jerked meats (chicken, fish and pork) “have become one of the most defining national, regional and international forms of Jamaican cuisine.”  She pointed out however, that while “jerked products are central to the Unique Jamaica Jerk Trail, travelers can enjoy a range of cuisines, treats and experiences – Jamaican style.”

She noted, for instance, that apart from “The Land of Look Behind”, the Unique Jamaica Jerk Trail takes visitors to destinations like Long Bay in Port Antonio, the world famous Appleton Rum Tour in St. Elizabeth, and the home of the award-winning Walkerswood jerk sauces, seasonings and condiments, in Walkerswood, St. Ann.

Mrs. Lynch said that the Unique Jamaica Jerk Trail is the latest of products being launched by the consortium designed “to exceed the expectations of guests by delivering a product that is authentic, interactive and unique.”

Unique Jamaica promotes three niche markets –Soft Adventure including: hinking, birding and water excursions; Culinary and Aesthetic experiences including: food, art and craft festivals; and Heritage and Culture showcasing reggae music concerts, folk music, drama and more.
